                               The Promise

 

     There bloomed a halo round the moon last night;

A paley circle of unbroken light

     Some twenty moon-diameters across

          At least and glowing in my startled sight.

     It seemed to me as though this nimbus was

A giant eyeball in the sky that held

     Me focussed in the beams which were expelled

          From that bright pupil in the centre set.

     And then my mind, by voiceless voice compelled,

Heard these calm words of comfort: “Do not fret,

     Nor be dismayed!. Although your anguished heart is torn

         By huge conflictions, doubts and fears, yet hope and love

     Will have their recompense. This sign is sent to  prove

That you are blessed and will not always always feel forlorn!”.
